A Brief History and Introduction to the Park
Tomlinson Run State Park is rich with local history. The park is named after one of the area’s earliest settlers, Benjamin Tomlinson who arrived here from Maryland around 1770. There are several mill sites, mineral springs, an old turnpike build in the mid 1800’s, and several locations of historical significance within the park boundaries.
The north and south forks of Tomlinson Run originate in Pennsylvania and meander through local farms and valleys before entering the park. The run fills Tomlinson Run Lake and cascades over the dam before flowing through a forested gorge that eventually reaches the Ohio River at “the backwaters.”
Tomlinson Run State Park consists of 1,396 acres, which was acquired by the State of West Virginia in 1935. Early development of the park was begun by the Civilian Conservation Corps and their mark can still be noticed today throughout the park.
