About St. Joseph's College (Marist Brothers), Samoa

Official Page for School Announcements, while also being dedicated to the alumni and connecting each previous and current students to their roots.

Description

St. Joseph's College (Marist Brothers) was the first secondary school to be established in Samoa, in the year 1950. It was first built in Mulivai Apia before moving to Lotopa in 1960. Due to growth of the college in the '60s and '70s, the school was relocated to Alafua in 1989 where it is still currently instituted.

A college under the Champagnat Marist Brothers, it was a school predominatly for young enthusiastic Samoan males. In 1993, St. Joseph's had an intake for girls in the Form 6 level (Year 13). The school motto "Tausisi I Mea Aupito Lelei", simply translated into "Strive for the Best" has been the ever driving force behind the success of the school in Academia and Sports, and can still be seen and potrayed in the lives of many acclaimed ex students.

One of the important aspects of the school is the brotherly love shared amongst students, past and present. The "Sipili Malisi" or "Marist Spirit" is something that makes St. Joseph's unique and different from other colleges in Samoa. The ability to share the same burden and success with your fellow mate, putting aside differences, statuses, positions/ranks in community; but just simply coming together as 'brothers'. Something that is still being instilled in the lives of every young man and woman that enters the gates of SJC.

Just over ten years ago before Samoa hosted the XIII South Pacific Games, the Champ of Champ Athletics Tournament occurred after a one year hiatus (there was no COC during 2006 because of upgrade works at Apia Park) - however Zone B still happened and was held at the fields at SJC with our school taking out all divisions in the boys section and Leulumoega Fou College taking out all the girls divisions. Man it was a fun time!

Back then the Zonings were also a bit different to... what they are today.

Zone A included Samoa College, Avele College, Leifiifi College, Vaimauga College, Maluafou College, CCCS Combined, Catholic Combined College, St Mary's College and Chanel College.

Zone B included CCWS, SJC, Wesley College, Faatuatua Christian Secondary School, Robert Louis Stevenson Secondary School, Faleata Secondary School, Wesley College, Nuuausala College, Leulumoega Fou College & Sagaga College.

Zone C was the rest of the Upolu colleges while Zone D was Savaii.

Come 2007, plastic seats had been added to the stadiums and it was an exciting time sitting in a brand new stadium with a massive new screen as well. LOL So it was a gem to find this picture from that time as it has been hard to find many pictures from earlier years. Also at that time, SJC had a comfortable school roll of over 600 students as you can see in this picture.
