Description

Mongu District is centrally located in Western Province of Zambia and serves as the Provincial Headquarters of the region. Before the creations of the new Districts by the Patriotic Front Government, both Lealui (the summer home) and Limulunga (the winter home) of the Litunga both fell within the borders of Mongu District. With the creation if Limulunga District, Limulunga – the summer home of the Litunga now falls within the borders of Limulunga District.

The Districts population increase from 150,129 in the 1990s to 166,609 in the last conducted census accounting for 21.3% of the entire population in the region. Females account for 51.8% of that population while males account for 48.2% of the districts population.

The distribution of the population is determined by the availability of more fertile land, road network, water, economic activities and telecommunication facilities. Consequently areas around the flood plain edge, river valleys, dambos and road networks are more populated than other areas.
