About Macheke

Macheke located in the province of Mashonaland East, Zimbabwe, located about 105 km south-east of Harare on the main Harare-Mutare road. According to the 1982 Population Census, the town had a population of 1,888. It was named after the Macheke River and means "you have divided". Tobacco and mixed crops is farmed place in the surrounding lands. He made many developments in the city during his time of ruling. The city is very small and it is under MUREWA. The city got the old locations called Nyazema (high density surburbs) which was the 1st location to be settled by the Macheke Founders.Now the town has grown into Springfield and Damview(low density surburbs), Mutamba phase 1 & phase 2 (high density). Macheke residents are mostly from Malawi and other parts of ZIMBABWE.The town founders are from Malawi and others from places around it. English, Chishona (Zezuru) and Chichewa are the major languages spocken in Macheke. Regarding business expansion, Macheke has burgeoned to a world standard were we have investors like T&C, Masaiti, Nompi and John Masamvu having interests and multi million dollar projects running concurrently. Vending along the highway is one of the major activities done in this area. Macheke is also the hometown of Vernon Chidongo prominent Zim-Hip Hop Artist and a well known member of National People's Party led by Joice Mujuru.
