Early Childhood Development
Early childhood development encompasses birth through age eight. Although it seems like a broad range of ages, children have one thing in common: they are all learning and developing new skills at a rapid pace during this time. These ages are critical in the formation of a child's development in all areas. There are many different developmental areas that need to be taught and supported during these ages.

Social Development
Social development has to do with a child's ability to interrelate with other children and adults. In early childhood, a child will learn social development skills, such as smiling back at his caregiver at just a few weeks old to learning about taking turns with a toy as a toddler.

Language Development
Language development is a child's ability to understand and use language, whether it is her native or second language. A baby's first coos in response to her parents singing to her is an example of very early language development, and an older child learning to use the proper names for objects is an example of more developed language skills.

Cognitive Development
Cognitive development is a child's ability to think and reason, according to the website, Cincinnati Childrens.org. Cognitive development is evident in a child learning how to reach out and grab an object at a very young age, and figuring out a simple math problem as a five-year-old.

Fine Motor Skill Development
Fine motor skill development is when a child is able to use their small muscle groups to do things. Small muscle groups, such as those in the fingers, are used from a young age on up. Young babies learn to hold objects in their hands at a few months of age.

According to UNICEF
What happens, or doesn’t happen to children in the earliest years of their lives is of critical importance, both to their immediate well-being and to their future. If you received the best start in your earliest years of life, you are more likely to have grown healthily, developed language and learning capacities, gone to school and led a productive, rewarding life. Yet millions of children around the world are still being denied the right to reach their full potential.

Every child must be ensured the best start in life – their future, and indeed the future of their communities, nations and the whole world depends on it. Every year, tens of millions of infants around the world begin an extraordinary sprint – from defenceless newborns to becoming proactive young children ready for school. And every year, countless numbers of them are stopped in their tracks – deprived, in one way or another, of the love, care, nurturing, health, nutrition and protection that they need to survive, grow and develop. Nearly 10 million children die before their fifth birthday each year and over 200 million children are not developing to their full potential – solely because they and their caregivers lack the basic conditions needed for young children to survive and thrive.

At Monnaish Pre-School we aim to ensure that what should happen and what should not happen is avoided in Early Childhood Development.

We would like to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout the term. It has been a wonderful experience receiving support you, since we opened on the 7th of January 2013. As we approach the Easter Holiday we are going to have a school break from the 29th to the 7th of April 2013. We will resume to our normal school activities on the 8th of April 2013. We have seen it necessary not to close during the school holidays so that we give them maximum continual support in their learning.

We give children opportunities to learn through play which helps them to develop communication and social skills. So far we have grouped our kids into two classes namely E.C.D.A (41/2 to 6 years) and E.C. D.B (4 years and below).

Children also need to develop their physical well being through exercises and in this regard we have managed to introduce gymnastics and aerobics lessons. We had a wonderful term. We have seen children developing in speech especially English speaking and some who were too reserved are now sociable.

We had our first trip with the support of the parents. The children visited Mwanga Lodge in Shamva. The children enjoyed the outgoing trip.

Challenges experienced:

a) Delays in picking and dropping children to and from school.
We are picking children between Msasa, Greendale, Ruwa and Goromonzi using a minibus. Due to the wide coverage delays were experienced in picking and delivering children. We sincerely ask parents to bear with us as we are working flat out to clear this bottle neck.

b) Swimming
Swimming lessons did not commence during first term but we are happy to notify parents that the school is now registered with Harare City Council Liz Brown. Swimming lessons are going to be introduced in the third term as second term is winter period.
c) Computers
The school bought computers and experienced delays in delivery. The supplier promised to deliver by mid-April and computer lessons will commence thereafter.
